An example of the help on offer at Authentic ~ The Interview

Here at Authentic we are experienced interview coaches and will endeavour to give you everything you need to walk into the interview prepared and confident. In the meantime here are some timeless tips that should help.

What do I wear to an interview?

For any interview you always want to look your best; when in doubt dress to impress.

Gentlemen: Full suit and tie, nothing too loud (stick to convention) with lace up polished shoes.

This is not the time or the place for you to show off a three year old wrist band from when you went to Glastonbury or wear a shirt that your friends won’t be seen with you wearing.

Ladies: The same rule applies, dress smart, not too much bling or makeup. You’re not being assessed on your presentation but you don’t want it to get in the way.

Make sure your clothes are clean and ironed. Whilst ‘clothes maketh the man/women’ is no longer an absolute truth they are the first impression of how much you care about yourself and the opportunity.

What should I ask in an interview?

You will be asked if you have any questions at the end of the interview. This is your chance to become the interviewer. Interviewees who don’t ask questions will not come across as passionate or interested as their competition (and you will have competition).

If this is your first interview this isn’t the time to grill your prospective employer about the holiday allowance or ask about the minutiae of their pension scheme – it’s your opportunity to show interest and learn some interesting facts about the business.

Questions to consider:

  • What is the company’s plan for the future?
  • What is the biggest challenge facing the business in the next year?
  • If you got the role what would it take for you to really impress them in your first three months?

How do I deal with nerves in an interview?

Almost everyone gets nervous before and during interviews. It’s completely natural and always feels much worse than it is. Remember that the adrenaline rushing through your body is actually ‘rocket fuel’ to help you communicate with passion. Recognise it is there and then use it to your advantage. Studies suggest that trying to ignore and repress nerves can make them worse.

Remember that an interview is just the same as any other professional conversation and an opportunity for you to talk about the role and your suitability in more detail.
